Police officers photograph a suitcase in front of the US embassy in Berlin, Germany, Friday, March 11, 2016.

Berlin police said, on Friday, a 23-year old German man is in custody after falsely claiming to have a bomb inside a suitcase he was trying to bring into the US Embassy.

The incident began at around 7:30 am when the man was turned away by security personnel at the door of the downtown embassy near the landmark Brandenburg Gate, police spokesman Jens Berger said.

The man then became violent and tried to punch security personnel, Berger said. He told the police that there was a bomb in his suitcase in front of the entrance while he was being arrested by Berlin police.

The area was cleared and a police robot inspected the bag. Only “personal items” like clothes were found in the bag, police said.

Berger said there are no details yet about the man but “there are many indications he is psychologically disturbed.”
