Evidence markers sit on the ground after a shooting at a playground on November 22, 2015 in New Orleans.

A gunfight between two groups injured at least 16 people on Sunday night at New Orleans Bunny Friend Park where hundreds of people came together for a party and filming a music video.

New Orleans police department spokesman Tyler Gamble stated that police had not enough details about what caused the shooting.

“We know, by speaking with some of the victims, that there were two groups of people shooting at each other,” Gamble said.

Some witnesses told police that there were two groups who opened fire reciprocatively and ran away from the scene afterwards.

No one has been arrested so far.

Kawandra Hayney, a witness, said she had been driving around the park with her daughter while people were escaping from shooting. Her 14-year-old daughter was hit in the knee and several times in her back.

“I saw the police coming, and I ran over to them,” she said, adding that she later found seven bullet holes in her vehicle.

Katie Moore, a local reporter in the city, tweeted, "No kids shot at Bunny Friend Park, but teenagers were."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, "At the end of the day, it's really hard to police against a bunch of guys who decide to pull out guns and settle disputes with 300 people between them.”

Police announced 10 people were taken to local hospitals with ambulances while six more were brought in by private vehicles.

According to Mr Gamble, 16 wounded people suffered from “direct gunshot wound” or a “graze wound.”

An estimated 500 people were at the playground.

New Orleans police commander Chris Goodley indicated the crowd at the park stayed “orderly” following the shooting. “But we were trying to preserve the crime scene as best as we could and tend to the victims,” he said.

Three witnesses said they saw a man with a grey machine gun, and also heard several gunshots coming from the crowd while he was running away from the scene. Afterwards, many people were lying on the pavement.

WVUE-TV stated that police estimated the shooting might be gang related.
