A nuclear plant unit was shut down in Buchanan, New York on late Saturday after a transformer failure which caused fire, but there was no threat to public or employees, according to the operating company.

The nuclear plant, operated by Entergy Corp, is located about 65 km north of New York City.

New York State police spokesman said they received emergency calls, citing a loud noise coming from the plant, but no damage to the reactor was reported.

Company officials said the fire caused the closure of the plant’s Unit 3 reactor, the remaining reactors continue to operate, adding there was no immediate information what caused the transformer failure.

"No threat to public safety at any time," said the company on social media.

The police said there were no injuries at the nuclear plant site, and the fire has been extinguished with no damage to the reactor.
