Obama on Friday appointed Brett McGurk as the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition against ISIS.

McGurk replaced retired Marine Gen. John Allen, who last month resigned from the position due to his discontentment with the government's opposition to the escalation of the war.

McGurk had served as Special Advisor to the National Security Council.

The newly appointed envoy had served as Allen’s assistant, however whether his stance on the government's policies is parallel to that of the former special envoy is unknown.
