Obama says his Hawaiian roots shaped his outlook as president

Hawaiians say Obama helped put the state back on the map and his visits make people more aware of the small island state.

Outgoing President Barack Obama is the first US leader born in Hawaii. 

Established as the 50th state in 1960, it's the most diverse in the United States. 

Obama says the multicultural nature of Hawaii helped him relate to people of different backgrounds, and shaped his outlook as President.
