The killer behind the Oregon collage shooting, Chris Harper Mercer committed suicide as law enforcement officers arrived at the crime scene, officials said.

Earlier statements indicated that Mercer was killed during a fire exchange with the law enforcement, however, it is now revealed that the gunman shot himself after the gun battle.

On Saturday, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said "The medical examiner has determined the cause of death of the shooter to be suicide."

24-year-old Mercer on Thursday killed 8 students and a teacher and injured at least seven people at Umpqua Community College in the US, where he was also a student.

The victims have been identified, their ages range from 18 to 67.

Officials revealed 14 weapons were later found at Mercer's home.

The motive behind the shooting is still not clear.  However, several survivors of the incident claimed that it was religion-driven.
