Police impersonators kill more than 12 in Honduras

Armed assailants dressed in police uniforms shoot dead 12 people at billiards hall in Honduras capital of Tegucialpa

At least 12 people were killed by gunmen dressed in police uniforms in the Honduras capital of Tegucigalpa on Saturday, authorities said.

Police spokesman Eduardo Barahona said at least five assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles arrived with a vehicle at a billiards hall in Tegucigalpa's violent northern 1 de Diciembre neighbourhood.

Three of the five attackers were wearing police uniforms and bullet-proof vests and targeted youngsters ranging in age from 19 to 30, killing at least 12 and injuring three, nearly 30 people were inside the hall which is owned by the Barrio 18 gang, according to Barahona.

An official investigation has been launched to find the ones responsible for the attack.

Gang related violence is common in Honduras as the country has the world’s highest murder rate with 16 homicides per day .
