Gunman who allegedly shot and killed a professor at Delta State University in Mississippi on Monday is still believed to be at the Delta State campus.

Bolivar County Deputy, Murray Roark reported that history professor, Ethan Schmidt was killed inside an office at Jobe Hall.

According to Cleveland Police Department, the professor was taken by ambulance and the shooter is on the run.

The university, located in Cleveland, Mississippi, verified the death on its Twitter account and asked students and other staff on campus to stay inside and away from windows.

A student at the university, Caleb Smith stated that he was on his way to get breakfast when he got the alert.

"I was just walking toward the building when I got the message, so I turned around and went back to my room," he said. "I have no idea where the shooter could have been."

The lockdown began at 10:45 am local time, while officials searched for the shooter.

Cleveland police, who are working with Delta state police on the investigation, said that the department did not confirm whether the active shooter is still at the campus or not. Officers are still searching for the gunman.

It is currently unclear whether anyone else is wounded.
