Mexicali city mayor said on Tuesday that at least 16 people are dead and five others injured during a fire in a senior nursing home on the outskirts of the northern border city.

Major Jamie Diaz Ochoa told reporters that five elderly residents were being treated at a local hospital for burns and intoxication while 23 others had been transferred to a temporary city shelter.

The cause of the fire was being investigated by the state prosecutors’ office, he added.

The fire broke out early on Tuesday at the non-profit Hermoso Atardecer residence, located in the rural area of Queretaro, 35 kilometres from the centre of Mexicali, Baja California, that borders the US state of California.

Local media El Universal reported that there were 45 people inside the building, housed formerly homeless elderly people, when the fire began.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
