Sela Ward plays a role as a female President in the White House in the movie “Independence Day 2.”
Sela Ward, who previously worked with Roland Emmerich on the thriller, The Day After Tomorrow, has joined the cast of the currently-filming Independence Day 2 to play new female President of the United States, President Landford.
She will be the calm and cool President to run the country during an alien attack in the USA.
Women have played small-screen heads of state before, however, female US presidents are not a common theme in major Hollywood productions.
Another example of a female President in the USA was in 1964’s Kisses for My President which starred Polly Bergen as the female President.
In the movie, the women of America join together on Election Day and elect a Leslie McCloud as the new US President. She gets the job in the office but then quickly realizes that she is not able to give so much time to her family as the president so she gets pregnant, resigns and becomes a housewife.
Independence Day 2 is due in June 24, 2016 almost 20 years after the original movie with a script recently rewritten by Carter Blanchard.
The first Independence Day opened on July 3, 1996 and made $817.4M worldwide.
