Selfies were unwelcome on the red carpets at the Cannes Film Festival this year, however it might be difficult to ban selfies completely from the festival.

Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux said “We are waging a campaign to slow down the contemporary practice of selfies on the red carpet and the steps. Beyond what we think, it’s a practice that’s often extremely ridiculous and grotesque.”

It came as a surprise when Cannes director banned selfies after they became a hit at the Oscars last year. Selfies at the Oscars received international attention were a hit all over the world.

Fremaux also added that "You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie."

Although selfies were banned on the red carpet nobody said anything about selfies at press conferences.

Salma Hayek on Thursday posed for a photo following the press conference for Matteo Garrone's competition title Tale of Tales. But Hayek didn't just get herself in the shot. She lounged across the main desk onstage to fit the whole room in the picture.
