A two-storey building which was under renovation in China collapsed on Saturday, killing 17 people and injuring 23 others.The 1990s-era building was being renovated by having more floors added to it, the collapse occurred while workers were working on adding the second floor.
According to state news agency Xinhua, the rescue team pulled out 40 workers from the wreck and several people who were linked to the collapse were arrested. Associated Press reported that the cause of the collapse is currently being investigated.
Recently, many accidents such as this one have been occurring quite regularly in China, this being an indication that necessary regulations have not been put into place.
On July, at least 11 people lost their lives after a shoe factory building collapsed in eastern China. Nearly 50 people were working in the factory when the incident occurred in the city of Wenling, in Zhejiang province. The collapse left 33 people injured and three others missing. Nine were able to escape from the factory.
On May, at least 38 people were killed and six others were injured after a fire broke out in a nursing home in central China’s Henan province.
On April, a fire broke out in a Chinese chemical plant and continued for almost 50 hours. 30,000 people were evacuated.
