New Zealand's finance minister Bill English on Monday was sworn in as New Zealand's prime minister during a ceremony in the capital Wellington.

His colleague from the governing National Party, Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett, was appointed deputy prime minister.

The appointments followed the surprise resignation of John Key as prime minister after eight years in the role.
