The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) said on Friday a volcano suddenly erupted in the southern Japanese island of Kuchinoerabu-jima, prompting the country to raise the alert level to the highest, NHK national television reported.

The volcanic eruption, which took place in the Mount Shindake in the early hours of Friday, forced the authorities to raise the alert to five which required the immediate evacuation of the island’s roughly 130 residents and to restrict people from entering the mountain.

Thick black smoke has been observed from the region after the eruption, said NHK, adding there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
