The United States Geological Survey said a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck near by the Solomon Island in the South Pacific Ocean on Saturday, just days after another strong quake shook the region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning said the epicentre of the quake was located 224 km east of Kira Kira at dept of just 37 km below the seabed, adding it had not triggered a tsunami.
