Head of Tajikistan’s special forces unit has joined ISIS, appearing in an online video posted on Wednesday.

Gulmurod Khalimov was a commander in Tajikistan’s special forces unit known as OMON. He went missing in late April.

In the video, Khalimov says he has joined ISIS in protest at Tajikistan’s religion policies, which he claims is anti-Islamic.

He is seen in the 12-minute footage holding an AK-47 and explaining why he left Tajikistan.

Addressing the Tajik government’s policies, he says he will return to Tajikistan “with slaughter.”

He says he was trained by elite Russian forces in Moscow and US special forces in the United States.

Around 500 Tajik nationals are reported to have joined ISIS.
