A US drone strike killed at least five suspected militants in Pakistan's northwest on Tuesday.
Pakistani intelligence officials said the strike took place in North Waziristan, on the border of Afghanistan, days after the Pakistani army started a fresh military operation in the area.
The officials say the area is the "latest Taliban stronghold" and an important smuggling route to Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Taliban controlled almost all of North Waziristan until Pakistani troops launched the operation Zarb-e-Azb there in June 2014. The army says the Taliban still controls some areas and the new offensive aims to clear the Shawal Valley.
US drone strikes are a controversial issue in Pakistan. The country’s government publicly slams the attacks and issues standard press releases for protest, but many believe Pakistani officials secretly work with Washington.
