California wildfires losses estimated at over $1B

The blazes have blackened more than 245,000 acres, (86,200 hectares) and destroyed an estimated 4,600 homes along with wineries and commercial buildings since erupting on October 8 and 9.

The California Department of Insurance said on Thursday its preliminary estimate for insured wildfire losses was $1.05 billion, based on claims received by the state’s eight largest insurers.

The numbers are expected to rise as there will be more insurance claims as the most destructive fire in California's history has transformed thousands of homes to ash.
