Ongoing border clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian soldiers have left seven Armenian servicemen dead, with Azerbaijan also suffering losses.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said, Armenian attempts to strike back at Azerbaijan were prevented with an effective response.

On the Azerbaijani side three servicemen - Rauf Veliyev, Neman Ahmadzade, and Zohrab Mustafazade -  have also been killed.

"Three Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in heavy fighting" with Armenian forces across the border of breakaway region of Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan's defence ministry said.

The South Caucasus countries have been locked in a dispute since 1988 when Armenia requested territory from Azerbaijan.

Despite negotiating for years a peace deal between the countries has still not been reached and they are still officially at war.
