At least one woman dies in western Greece earthquake

Western Greek island of Lefkada was hit with a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, US Geological Survey confirmed, earthquake killed at least one person while causing damages to buildings, Greek police said.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 5 km early this morning 13 km (8 miles) west of the Ionian island causing tremors in the surrounding areas.

According to Greek authorities, a 59-year-old woman in the village of Ponti Vassilikis died after a falling rock from nearby mountain hit her house. Greek police could not confirm the death of a second woman who allegedly died in a stable in the village of Athani.

"There is a dead woman, the stable fell over her and we are still trying to recover her body under the rubble," local gift shop owner in the village, told Reuters.

Moreover, dozens of people were rushed to the hospital in Lefkada to receive treatment as the island is suffering aftershocks reaching 5.2 on the Richter Scale.

The quake also caused serious damages to the road network of the southwestern part of the island.

“It is too early to  say if the Lefkada’s severe earthquake was the main one,” assistant professor of geology at the University of Patras stated.
