Approximately 1.1 million refugees were registered in Germany in 2015, over 400,000 of them from Syria, the German government said on Wednesday.
In total, between December and January, 1,091,894 people were registered, the Interior Ministry said. Syrians were by far the biggest single group, accounting for 428,468 people.
Some 154,046 Afghans and 121,662 Iraqis were registered as Syrians.
Germany has welcomed more refugees than any other EU country. In the beginning of 2015, it hosted numerous people from Balkan countries. The fourth and fifth-biggest sources of asylum-seekers last year were Albania and Kosovo.
The government said that 476,649 people formally applied last year and that this is the highest number on record and more than double the previous year’s figure of 202,834.
