Pope Francis will host Cuban President Raul Castro at Vatican on Sunday, four months before the pontiff's scheduled official trip to the Caribbean island

In a brief statement, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said this weekend’s meeting with Castro was strictly private and not an official state visit.

The first Latin American Pope Francis has played an important role in rapprochement process between Cuba and the United States, which started in last December with an announcement by Barack Obama.

In April, Vatican announced that the pope will visit the predominantly catholic island in September honouring an invitation from the Cuban government and the Cuban Roman Catholic Church.

Pope is scheduled to visit also the US right after his visit to Cuba in September.
