Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta has announced his resignation after huge protest called for cabinet resignations as the death toll of nightclub fire climbed to 32 and three owners of the nightclub have been investigated on charges for manslaughter.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta said in a television broadcast, "I am stepping down as prime minister," and he said "I hope the government's resignation will satisfy the people who came out in the streets."

There was a massive protest on the streets in the capital city Bucharest on Tuesday regarding the nightclub incident. This led to cabinet resignations as the death toll of the nightclub fire climbed to 32.

Also the head of the governing leftist Social Democrat Party Liviu Dragnea held a press conference in parliament and said, "Victor Ponta is giving up his mandate. Someone needs to assume responsibility for what has happened. This a serious matter and we promise a quick resolution of the situation".

"You probably noticed thousands of people last evening and what they demanded."
