Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have met to talk over the recently downed Russian warplane during a Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE) summit in Belgrade.
The meeting in Belgrade started at 16:30 (1300 GMT).
The meeting was the first high-level talk between Turkey and Russia after the downing of a Russian warplane which violated Turkey’s airspace near the Syrian border.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said on Wednesday that he will not hesitate to meet with his Turkish counterpart at the OSCE summit.
Lavrov said that relations between the two countries would not be as they were in the past following the incident.
The meeting of Cavusoglu and Lavrov followed a diplomatic crisis between Moscow and Ankara after two Turkish F-16 fighter jets on an aerial patrol last week intercepted an unidentified warplane within rules of engagement when it intruded into Turkish airspace on the Syrian border, despite warnings.
