Mahmood Farooqui, the Indian co-director of 2010 satirical comedy Peepli Live, has been arrested for raping an American PhD student he had been helping with research.
The 30-year-old woman claimed that Farooqui sexually assaulted her after a party he held at his rented accommodation in Sukhdev Vihar in March this year.
Farooqui was called in for questioning on Saturday. After appearing in court he is now being kept under judicial custody for 14 days according to The Times of India.
According to the Indian Express the woman said she and Farooqui had become “good family friends” after the Oxford graduate and writer helped her gather information for her scholarly research.
The 30-year-old woman also said she also knew Farooqui's wife, filmmaker Anusha Rizvi.
Rizvi said in a written statement, “The complaint is manipulated, false and belated. We don’t want to make any further comments on the matter because the case is under investigation. We will wait for the court’s decision where the actual truth of the matter will come out.”
She also added, “We are determined to fight this till the reality is presented before the people. We are very sure of it,” she added.
