Alleged evidence of a crashed spacecraft on Mars

Updated Aug 27, 2015

A photograph taken by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover shows an object that looks like the spaceships featured in blockbuster science fiction movies such as Star Wars.

Editor of the website UFO Sightings Daily, Scott C Waring, posted a photo of the alleged spacecraft on the website, saying “I found this anomaly in the latest Curiosity Rover photo. The black object looks like a crashed UFO.”

"The craft is only about 2.5-3 meters across, so it probably only held a few passengers,” he said.

"There is only one photo of the ship. The rover usually takes many of each area, but not this one. Perhaps tomorrow it will take more," he added.

Scientists say that ightings such as this one are often the result a phenomenon called pareidolia. Pareidolia is an optical illusion that occurs when the brain recognises familiar shapes in patterns or textures, such as rocks, clouds or bark. Like most mysterious objects seen on Mars, the object is most likely an odd shaped rock.
