New Zealand is the first place to welcome in 2016 as thousands of people gathered in Auckland celebrated the new year.

Australia traditionally is the second country after New Zealand to ring in the new year. Australia's biggest city, Sydney has welcomed new year under high security measures.

Also, at the heart of Europe, Brussel has cancelled both its annual festivities and fireworks while Paris has scaled back the city's celebrations and only cancelled the fireworks display.

"It's better not to take any risks," said mayor Yvan Mayeur in Brussel.

"The people of Paris and France need this symbolic passage into the New Year," said Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo.
