Malian soldiers stand guard at a checkpoint at the entrance to Timbuktu, Mali, after unknown assailants attacked and withdrew from inside a UN police base in the city, February 5, 2016.

Three soldiers have been killed after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Mali’s central Mopti region, Mali’s Defence Ministry said.

Two soldiers were also wounded Tuesday in an explosion in Mondoro, near the border with Burkina Faso, the defence ministry added.

Responsibility for the attack has not yet been claimed by any group.

The Macina Liberation Front, known to operate in the Mopti region of Mali, is an active extremist group which claimed responsibility for several attacks on the army last year.
