A huge fire has erupted at a 63-storey luxury hotel in downtown Dubai on Thursday near tallest tower of the world, where people were gathering to watch a fireworks show as part of the New Year celebrations, police said.

The Dubai government media office reported 14 people have been injured slightly.

"All residents of the hotel were evacuated and there are 14 wounded, with light injuries," the media office said.

The government media office also tweeted that a "fire has been reported in the Address Downtown hotel. Authorities are currently on-site to address the incident swiftly and safely."

According to the Dubai government's media office tweets the fire had started on the 20th floor, on the outside of the tower and internal fire-fighters have hindered the fire spreading inside of the hotel.

However, Gulf Emirate authorities said, the fire has been controlled ’90 percent.’
