Colonel Wael Tahoun was killed in a drive-by shooting by a motorbike driven by two masked men in front of Tahoun’s house in Helmeya, central Cairo.

The shooting also killed his escorting junior soldier Ibrahim el Menshawi, the reports said. Wael Tahoun was senior officer at the General Security sector of the ministry of interior, he was formerly in charge of Al Matareya police station, the very same place in which Egyptian lawyer Kareem Hamdi died of torture during interrogation.

Right after the shooting, the attacking motorbikers reportedly dropped a bomb in a garbage can in front of a nearby hospital to distract attention from the gunfire, two people were injured as a result, according to Ministry of Interior. Witnesses said the masked men waited for the officer to exit his house past midnight, then fired 47 bullets at Tahoun and his assistant and ran away, according to Al Youm Al Sabea news website.

Cairo’s security directorate released a statement saying the senior officer and his assistant died before reaching the hospital, and that police forces are widening their search parameters to capture the attackers as soon as possible.
