A French soldier was accidentally killed by his fellow soldier at a military camp in Mali on Thursday, France's defense ministry has said.
The soldier, 23-year-old Baptiste Truffaux, was transported to the surgical unit in the northern city of Gao for medical care but he died the same day.
France intervened in Mali in early 2013 after the country's northern half fell under the control of Tuareg separatists and then al-Qaida-linked militants.
French troops are still operating in Gao and other parts of northern Mali as part of a five-nation counterterrorism operation codenamed Barkhane.
The operation, which covers four other countries in addition to Mali, started a year ago and comprises the use of drones to help spot militant hideouts.
