A Palestinian who allegedly stabbed a woman in the illegal West Bank settlement was shot dead, according to the Israeli army statement released on Monday.

The alleged attacker who is said to be Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli soldiers before he was able to flee the scene in the Israeli occupied West Bank city of Nablus.

Israeli police identified the woman as 30-year old Dafna Meir, and Palestinian health officials identified the alleged assailant as Wissam Qasrawi, 21, who was from the Mesilyeh village near the northern town of Jenin.

The incident took place only a couple of after another Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli soldiers.

The latest incident has brought the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli troops in 2016 to at least 16.

Last year witnessed the killing of 178 Palestinians, most of whom were accused of attempting attacks on Israelis, while 23 Israelis were also killed in the same period, most of whom were soldiers.

The recent incidents come amid four months of violence that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned may incite the third Palestinian intifada (uprising).

Tension caused by years of Israeli occupation in Palestine was once again sparked on September 13, when Israeli soldiers stormed into the holy Al Aqsa mosque and attacked civilian worshippers while vandalising the mosque.
