At least two Mexicans were accidentally killed as a result of a tourist group being shot at by security forces in a western desert in Egypt, Mexico's Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Sunday.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto condemned the incident on his Twitter account, calling the attack was a tragic incident and saying an investigation into it would be conducted.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said, "A joint force from the police and military, whilst chasing terrorist elements in the oasis area of the western desert tonight, accidentally engaged four four-wheel drives belonging to a Mexican tourist group."

"The incident resulted in the death of 12 Mexicans and Egyptians and the injury of 10 others who have been transferred to hospitals.”
