Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has announced his resignation as the head of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
According to the Al Arabiya News Channel, up to half of the PLO’s 18 executive committee also submitted their resignations on Saturday night.
However, Abbas will still keep his position as the president of the Palestinian Authority.
His resignation from the PLO comes after a report released by the Times of Israel newspaper last week foretold his plans to quit the organisation.
Abbas will be replaced by PLO chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, according to the Israel Hayom newspaper.
The Palestinian National Council is now expected to elect a new executive committee for the PLO within a month.
