Saudi Arabia is ready to participate in ground operations in Syria if the US led alliance decides to start similar operations, a Saudi defence minister adviser said.
"The kingdom is ready to participate in any ground operations that the coalition may agree to carry out in Syria," Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri told al Arabiya TV in an interview.
Asseri said he believed that to win the fight against DAESH, the coalition needed to combine aerial operations with ground operations.
The Saudi offer to participate in ground operations in Syria launched by the US led coalition was welcomed by US Defence Secretary Ash Carter.
Carter claimed that increased activity by other countries would make it easier for the US to accelerate its fight against DAESH.
"That kind of news is very welcome," he told reporters.
Carter said he will look forward to discussing the offer with Saudi defence minister in Brussels next week.
"I would not want to comment specifically on this until we've had a chance to review it," John Kirby said.
The US is also watching events in Libya very carefully but had made no decisions on expanding its role there, the Pentagon chief said.
