A Tunisian soldier opened fire in a military base in the Bardo district of the capital of Tunis killing at least seven incuding a colonel and injuring eleven soldiers inside.
The attack took place at the Bouchoucha barracks located near the country’s parliament and other administrative offices.
Tunisia’s army spokesperson reported that the assailant was shot dead after the attack.
"The armed forces took control of the situation after firing on the soldier," ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati told AFP.
An announcement as to the gunman’s motivation is yet to be made.
A local school near the base was closed due to emerging security concerns. An al Qaeda affiliated attack on a museum in the district had killed 22 people, mostly tourists, in March.
Tunisia has been battling local armed groups affiliated with al Qaeda and ISIS as political turmoil in the nation has lead to disorder.
