Passengers wait at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey on December 31, 2015, after announcement of further flight cancellations due to adverse weather.

Turkish carriers announced on Friday that several scheduled flights from Ataturk and Sabiha Gokcen airports have been cancelled after heavy snow blanketed Istanbul.

The national flag carrier Turkish Airlines reported that 181 domestic and international flights were cancelled due to severe winter conditions.

Pegasus Airlines cancelled 63 flights and Onur Air cancelled 3, leading certain passengers to find themselves stranded at the airport.

Heavy snowfall over the night also led to the closure of Ataturk International Airport to air traffic for about 30 minutes.
