Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave a statement today at Ataturk Airport - before travelling to Chile - about the violation of Turkish airspace by a Russian warplane yesterday.
"Yesterday afternoon a fighter jet belonging to the Russian Air Force violated Turkish airspace. The pilot ignored multiple warnings - both in Russian and English - and we view this as an attempt by Russia to do whatever it takes to raise tensions in the region.
"A violation of Turkish airspace is also considered a violation of NATO airspace. Due to this, the incident is under investigation by NATO. Moreover, NATO detected the violation before we did. If Russia continues to disregard and ignore Turkish sovereignty it will have no choice but to accept the consequences of this behaviour," said Erdogan.
