Turkish Airlines wins ‘best ad of decade’ award

Competition held by Youtube crowns Turkish Airlines’ ‘Kobe vs. Messi: The Selfie Shootout’ video ‘the best video ad of the decade’

Youtube announced the results of its “the best video ad of the decade” competition on Tuesday with Turkish Airlines’ “Kobe vs. Messi: The Selfie Shootout” video awarded “the best ad of the decade” as a result of a popular vote. 

The crowned video shows the famous sports celebrities Lionel Messi and Kobe Bryant trying to top one other by taking selfies at breath taking locations such as the Kremlin in Moscow or the Great Wall of China. The video ends with Kobe 'photobombing' Messi between Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque) and Hagia Sophia of Istanbul.

Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier of Turkey, has seen a popularity and growth boom since 2003. Currently Turkish Airlines operates scheduled flights to more than 300 airports in more than 100 countries, making the company’s global coverage the largest in the world.

The winner video was originally released on December 3, 2013.  After release, it went viral in just a few hours. So far, the original source of the video has received more than 141 million views. The company is known for other high profile ad campaigns as well. The Kobe vs Messi: Legends on Board video of 2012 and Drogba vs. Messi: #EpicFood video also received many clicks. The more recent Turkish Airlines Fly Africa! video has already surpassed 8 million views.

In the competition, Volkswagen’s “The Force” commercial took second spot. Other competitors in top five were “Always #LikeAGirl,” “Epic Split” by Volvo and “Real Beauty Sketches” by Dove.

Turkish Airlines has been a part the “Star Alliance,” a global alliance of commercial airlines since 2008. The company maintains a 265 passenger aircraft fleet, yet still manages to keep the average fleet age under 7 years, which is an achievement for a large fleet company.

Turkish Airlines has received many other prestigious awards in the past years. An annual customer satisfaction survey conducted by SKYTRAX honoured the company as “the best airline of Europe” for the fourth time in 2014. At the same time the company won recognition for top quality in-flight services and best aircraft seats.
