Little help in Brazil for mothers caught in Zika epidemic

Women like Brenda Pereira Ramos are left to cope by themselves with babies suffering from microcephaly – abnormal brain development linked to mothers contracting the Zika virus during pregnancy.

There have been Zika outbreaks reported in 47 countries, mainly in the Americas.

Maria Fernanda is one of almost 2,300 babies born with microcephaly in Brazil since the Zika epidemic started in 2015.

The condition involves children growing up with abnormally small heads and brain damage. Without access to adequate financial or medical assistance, many mothers are left to cope as best they can.
