Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have discussed bilateral relations and regional and global issues in a phone call.
Erdogan said Türkiye would continue its efforts to further develop relations with Japan in all areas, particularly the defense industry, investment, and trade, said a statement by Türkiye's Communications Directorate on Wednesday.
He said negotiations are the only way to resolve the conflict between Iran and the US, adding that Türkiye supports diplomatic efforts toward lasting peace and stability.
The Turkish president also once again extended his condolences to Takaichi over the victims of last month’s earthquake in Kumamoto, southwestern Japan.
Takaichi lauds Türkiye’s efforts in Middle East
Following the phone call, the Japanese prime minister said Erdogan plays an “important role” in the Middle East region.
On the ongoing US-Iran war, he said on X: “I stated that I highly appreciate Türkiye 's dedicated efforts in playing a mediating role, and that Japan, too, will work closely with Türkiye and the international community to persistently make every possible diplomatic effort.”
“I also emphasised the importance of ensuring free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without any additional costs,” he added.
On bilateral ties, Takaichi expressed her “desire to further develop cooperation in areas such as education, security, and the economy.”
Expressing her gratitude for Erdogan’s condolences over the recent earthquake in Japan, Takaichi said Tokyo “will continue to closely collaborate with Türkiye not only on bilateral relations but also on regional and international affairs.”
