Multiple oil depots and refineries across Tehran were hit by Israeli strikes overnight on March 7, sending thick plumes of black smoke towering into the sky and releasing massive amounts of toxic chemicals into the air. 

Scientists warn the hazardous effects could threaten human health — and the environment — long after the smoke clears.
