Austria's dual-citizenship proposal sparks anger in Italy

It is feared the Austrian offer of dual-citizenship to German speaking Italians living in the South Tyrol province could drive a wedge between Vienna and Rome and also test the loyalties of citizens in the province.

South Tyrol used to be part of Austria, but it was ceded to Italy in 1919 after Austria and its allies were defeated in World War-I.

The Austrian government has sparked anger in Italy by announcing plans to offer dual citizenship to German speaking Italian's living in the South Tyrol province .

The semi autonomous region was a part of Austria until the end of World War One.

While some in the province have welcomed the plan, others have labelled it a land grab.
