The UN says more than 5,000 immigrants drowned in the Mediterranean Sea last year trying to reach Europe.

More than 100 people, including women and children, were rescued Monday by the crew of a charity ship in the Mediterranean Sea.

The immigrants, mainly from Africa, were the latest to risk the perilous sea journey to escape war and poverty in their home countries.

According to the UN, a record number of more than 5,000 immigrants died trying to cross the Mediterranean last year.
