Immigrant mayor shaking up politics in Britain's Sheffield

The city of Sheffield in the north of England has a new Lord Mayor. He's just 29 and was a child refugee from Somalia. Elected by his fellow councilors a few weeks ago, Magid Magid is determined to put fresh energy into the city.

Magid Magid says his focus is to get the city's young to re-engage and telling them they can make a difference, July 2018.

Sheffield Town Hall, a symbol of Britain's industrial heritage and civic tradition, was opened by Queen Victoria herself in 1897. Now the new Lord Mayor of the city is shaking things up inside.

Before becoming the Mayor of the city, Magid Magid was born in Somalia and then spent several years in a refugee camp in Ethiopia before arriving in Sheffield with his mother and five siblings.

TRT World’s Simon McGregor-Wood reports.
