Syrian families devastated with news of family member deaths

In the last few weeks, hundreds of Syrian families have learned from the regime that their missing relatives have been declared dead.

Syrian regime has begun updating the records of tens of thousands of activists who disappeared during the early stages of its seven-year civil war. Families who have spent years awaiting answers over loved ones are heading to civil registry offices to collect final official recognition of deaths.

Syrian regime has begun updating the records of tens of thousands of activists who disappeared during the early stages of its seven-year civil war. Families who have spent years awaiting answers over loved ones are heading to civil registry offices to collect final official recognition of deaths.

The Syrian regime is notifying relatives of some political prisoners detained during the seven-year war, that their loved ones are dead. 

But many families are finding that news difficult to believe. 

Human rights groups say tens of thousands of people have disappeared in government jails, but no one knows how many have died, or how. 

Documents acknowledge that they have died in custody.
