Tension surrounded the voting as activists and opposition parties boycotted the election amid a crackdown on weekly marches by the Hirak protest movement, which were all but banned under new rules for demonstrations.
Saturday's election follows the arrest of seven leading protest movement figures and heavy police deployment in the capital Algiers, blocking any bid by the Hirak movement to hold anti-government protests.
The election is opposed by a massive protest movement that wants the vote cancelled until the entire ruling elite has been swept from power. Polls opened at 0700 GMT and closed at 1800 GMT.
