President Emmanuel Macron signed a new military budget on the eve of parades for Bastille Day, aimed at lifting defence spending to 2 percent of gross domestic product.
The Bastille Day ceremonies brought to an end a visit Macron needs as a boost to France's standing on the world stage – one which could also help a US leader left short of international friends by his stance on free trade and climate change.
The parade is the first major event since the city was attacked during Bastille Day celebrations last year that left 86 people dead.
