Australia's Cardinal George Pell, a former top adviser to Catholic Pope Francis, was remanded into custody on Wednesday after a sentence plea hearing on his conviction for sexually abusing two choirboys more than two decades ago.
An Australian court found the senior Vatican adviser guilty by a trial jury on one count of sexual abuse and four counts of indecent assault of two boys at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s.
The UAE is religiously diverse thanks to a large number of expats who practice their religion openly in the country. Pope Francis' visit is a welcome development but the UAE can do a lot more to be a truly 'tolerant' nation.
"To those who abuse minors I would say this: convert and hand yourself over to human justice, and prepare for divine justice," Pope Francis said. His statement is the strongest yet on an issue testing the Church.
