The action comes after police released photos showing three officers smiling as they reenacted a chokehold that their colleagues used on Elijah McClain, a Black man who died after police stopped him last summer in a Denver suburb.
The footage, apparently shot in a Florida retirement community, shows a man driving a golf-cart bearing "Trump 2020" and "America First" signs, being heckled by a roadside protester chanting "racist."
The investigation into the death of 23-year-old black man will be thorough and “worthy of public trust and confidence in the criminal justice system”, Colorado's attorney general said in a statement.
The African-American youth was killed last year in August but none of the officers involved have been punished. Authorities in Aurora in the US state of Colorado are looking at ways of launching an inquiry.
